New York Mets closer Billy Wagner needs elbow surgery that will sideline him through the 2009 season. The five-time All-Star has been sidelined since Aug. 3. He has a torn medial collateral ligament in his left elbow and a torn flexor pronator, which is a muscle in the forearm. The Mets said Monday that Wagner will have surgery later this week. Wagner, a 37-year-old left-hander, is owed $10.5 million next year, the final guaranteed season in $43 million, four-year contract with the Mets.

I don't care much about losing Wagner (we're already in 1st place, and lets be honest...how much confidence did you have in him in tight situations in late Sept or Oct?) the only thing that sucks is that we still have to pay him for next year. Coulda used that $ and gotten ourselves some other bullpen help.

Yeah but he's got some sick shit. When he's on he's almost unhittable.

And I think those blown saves he had this year could be due to his arm being fucked up. It's not a crazy assumption.

But if they somehow find someone better or the same as Wagner next year I'm all for it. Closers like him do not grow on trees.

I'm with ya...and I've always been a big Wagner fan, but he's 37 and now he's on the shelf for this season AND all of next season...so we've gotta start looking around, cuz 39 year old guys who are "almost unhittable" don't grow on trees.

Again, I hope this F-Mart farmer is as good as they say, cuz we DEFINITELY coulda gotten bullpen help (maybe Fuentes) had Omar been willing to give him up.

Well I was talking as if we still had him for next year not hurt. He may just retire after the surgery next year. I don't think he can make a living after this surgery by not throwing gas. Pitchers almost never have the same velocity after this kind of surgery.

I don't think money is a problem for them. They'll spend it if need be.

They'll look around for a new closer this offseason. They have to.

Delgado won't come cheap next year either.
