hey guys, i am going to change my routine around and ditch the bench press, im gonna experiment a little and replace the bench, with, you guessed it! weighted pushups! i was just wondering if anyone uses this exercise in their routine? comments? anything? my chest day would be dips, feet elevated weighted pushups, and regular weighted pushups. just try something new, see what happens...

Sure why not, give it a try. If it doesn't work, go back to the bench press.

As a young lifter, I remember going into the gym and seeing some really big, strong dudes lifting heavy weights, clapping chalk, and making a lot of noise. The music playing on the stereo made you want to work out the moment you walked inside. This has been replaced by a bunch of pencil neck “trainers” with extra-medium muscle shirts and small shorts running around with clipboards having their clients balance on top of a swimming pool ball, juggle dumbbells, and recite their ABCs backwards. - Paul Caldwell

He probably read something about this in Men's Health.

I wouldnt totally get rid of bench presses. By the time you get back into it, you're gonna wonder how the hell you lost 20-30 lbs of your max.

I agree, I wouldn't cut out bench press entirely..

Maybe just dont go HEAVY on bench press and make your focus the pushups..

Yeah short reps. Like 2-3 inches ROM tops. Those long reps are counterproductive.

and when you bench you should throw a ton of weight up there and bench it how ever you can, air hump if you need to, and when you squat go down 2-3 inches and come up for 3 reps, you wanna do 10x3 again a ton of weight, and dont forget to train your forearms and biceps, they release hormones to the rest of your body that make you gain mass overall, it is important to work the biceps and forearms at least 5 times a week.

That's correct. It's important to overload the bar with 375% of your 1 rep max to "get a feel for the weight".

Maybe if you're trying to mix things up, do different angled presses, and add some dips in. Pushups are very similar to benching as far as muscle recruitment goes. And as stated before, you're likely to lose some strength because it would be hard to get enough weight added to equal your bench weight (unless you're benching 150lbs, and weigh 200lbs).

You might also try feet elevated pushups. Pushups would also be a good option for explosive training.

I still wouldn't replace the bench for very long.

BEERS!

Questions are the best thing to ask.
